State of Nevada’s Marketing Industry

Nevada’s economy was on life-support during the recession and it’s having a tough time recovering. Many of its problems can be attributed to real estate speculation. As of 2012, its bankruptcy filings continued to be high and excesses in the housing market remained a drag, according to the 2012 Chase report on Nevada’s Economic Outlook.

Still, even if it’s down, it’s not out. Though jobs may be scarce, Nevada’s population growth through 2016 is projected to be higher than any other state, according to Forbes in 2012. People are looking for jobs in mining and – you guessed it – casinos. Tourism is the state’s #1 money earner.

All of Nevada’s big Fortune 500 players – Las Vegas Sands, Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts – feed off the gambling industry. Casinos generated total revenues of more than $22.9 billion in 2012, though they still posted a $1.21 billion net loss, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal in January, 2013.

Job Prospects for Nevada Marketing Graduates

Job prospects for Nevada marketing graduates look good. From 2010-2020, Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation is predicting jobs for marketing managers will grow by 10.6%, advertising and promotions managers by 11%, market research analysts by 35.8% and PR specialists by 10.8%.

Las Vegas is your best bet by far. Many of the state’s biggest advertising agencies – including R&R Partners and the Schadler Kramer Group – are located in the Entertainment Capital of the World and have close ties with the tourism industry.

Your education credentials should be welcome. Just over half of Nevada’s students graduate from high school, according to the National Center For Education Statistics in 2013. In fact, in some fast-growing sectors such as health care, manufacturing, mining and energy, employers are struggling to fill the demand with qualified employees.

Nevada Schools for Marketing

There are only four accredited marketing schools in Nevada. Here are two to compare:

1. University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV) (https://www.unlv.edu/business)

UNLV’s Lee Business School offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in marketing and an MBA. The school holds dual accreditation in both business and accounting from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and achieved a part-time MBA ranking of #111 from U.S. News & World Report in 2013.

Undergraduates have the option to apply for internships, as well as to join the UNLV student branch of the American Marketing Association (AMA). The school also hosts three centers that bring faculty, students and Nevada businesses together.

2. University of Nevada – Reno (UNR) (https://www.unr.edu/degrees?c=College-of-Business)

Yes, that’s the same university, different location. Similar to UNLV, UNR’s College of Business offers a Bachelor of Science with a major in marketing, along with an MBA. There is, however, no emphasis in marketing for the MBA. U.S. News & World Report rated UNR’s part-time MBA #170 in 2013.

Ambitious undergraduates can apply for internships with local companies, work in study abroad programs, and participate in national marketing competitions. Students at UNR also pay 80% less than at the average Tier 1 institution, as of 2013.

Professional Marketing Organizations in Nevada

Nevada’s marketers brand themselves as a sexy and social bunch, and the Silver State has plenty of marketing organizations in Reno and Las Vegas. You may find the networking opportunities and continuing education courses are worth the membership dues.

Business Degree Programs in Nevada

Whether working as a financial controller for one of the nation’s largest suppliers of gold, silver, and mercury, or managing guest services at one of the four Fortune 500 tourism and accommodations companies based out of Las Vegas, graduates of Nevada’s respected business schools have real opportunities in diverse industries.

With a GSP (Gross State Product) of $139.7 billion in 2015, Nevada has shown itself to have one of the healthiest economies in the country. In 2016, its GSP grew by 5.2 percent, the third highest in the nation.

Much of Nevada’s success is due to the diversity of industry in the state and the diversity of its populace. While the vast majority of the state centers around Las Vegas, there are small rural communities scattered throughout Nevada that survive independently of Las Vegas’ famous tourism industry.

Companies like Newport Mining and Goldcorp, two of the largest producers of gold in the entire world, collectively responsible for 231 tons of gold annually, operate out of Nevada. While these and other mining companies only employ 12,000 people, their median income is over $80,000, well above the state’s overall median of $51,000.

How Small Businesses Make a Big Impact in Nevada

Even with an unemployment rate higher than the national average of 5.8 percent, Nevada has seen a steady increase in job creation as the employment rate has dropped from 9.4 percent to 7.1 percent in the last three years. This trend is promising for the overall economic growth of the state and is in part thanks to the small business community and the entrepreneurs that make these businesses a reality.

Two-fifths of the state’s private workforce is employed by small businesses in the state, which also supports jobs for business managers, accountants, marketing professionals and more. Small firms have continued to create new jobs.

Business school graduates stand to benefit strongly from a career in the state of Nevada. Whether they are cutting their teeth opening up their own firm, or marketing for Ceasar’s Entertainment or MGM Mirage, Nevada is a place where specialized business skills are put to good use.

University of Nevada Las Vegas

The recently revamped Master of Business Administration (MBA) curriculum offered by the Lee Business School at the University of Nevada allows students to earn their degree at a flexible pace: you can take as many as four courses a semester or as few as two. This allows you to pursue your degree full time or organize your schedule around evening classes. Another option is the Executive MBA. This hands-on program for seasoned executives is fast-paced – just 18 months long – and is designed to be relevant to day-to-day business challenges. This program also includes an international study trip to complement the global business focus of the program. Classes are held every other Friday and Saturday to accommodate work schedules.

University of Nevada Reno

The University of Nevada Reno’s MBA earns top ratings. The program is focused on the needs of working professionals with a demonstrated capacity to achieve. Students can waive a number of core courses if they have completed a similar course within the last five years at an AACSB-accredited institution with a grade of B or above, allowing many to shave time and costs off of their studies. In addition to the traditional full-time and part-time programs, Nevada Reno’s College of Business also offers an online Executive MBA program that’s delivered through a highly-interactive, technology-rich environment. Organized around the needs of mid-career executives, this online program is as convenient as it is demanding. Students move through a sequenced set of courses as part of a cohort that provides continuity and a supportive, stimulating learning environment.
