State of Nebraska’s Marketing Industry

Nebraska’s economy recovered relatively fast from the recession, recording steady gains after 2009 – an impressive feat – and avoided the housing excesses of other states. The job market took a hit, but is gradually recovering. All the indicators point to sunny skies.

A healthy mix of industries, including agriculture, telecommunications, nondurable manufacturing and transportation, keep marketers in the Cornhusker state busy. Five Fortune 500 companies have roots in Omaha, a city that topped Kiplinger’s list of “10 Great Cities to Raise Your Kids.

Fast-growing advertising agencies in 2012 included Beck Ag, Ervin & Smith and Firespring. Beck Ag, which caters to Nebraska’s agriculture sector, grew 84% from 2008-2011. Ervin & Smith added 15 jobs in the same time period.

Job Prospects for Nebraska Marketing Graduates

Happy days are here again. From 2008-2018, Nebraska’s Department of Labor has projected demand for marketing jobs in the state will keep rising. They’re predicting 31% growth in employment for market research analysts, 21% for PR specialists and 17% for marketing managers.

Some of this demand will come from big players like Berkshire Hathaway (Warren Buffett’s company), ConAgra Foods and Mutual of Omaha Insurance. But don’t discount the young guns – a fair number of Nebraska technology firms appeared in Inc.’s Top 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in 2012.

If you do find a solid marketing job in Nebraska, you should live quite comfortably. Nebraska residents enjoy living costs 10.5% below the national average, according to the Kiplinger report on Omaha.

Nebraska Schools for Marketing

UNL’s College of Business Administration doesn’t rank in U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 list of “Best Business Schools” (the university itself is ranked #101 nationally), but it is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

2. Creighton University (https://business.creighton.edu/)

Creighton offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in marketing, an MBA, or both. Founded on Jesuit principles, Creighton makes a point of being guided by the living tradition of the Catholic Church.
